The all-volunteer Mission Valley Planning Group has several openings and is seeking applicants.
“There are currently three seats available as follows: two people who qualify as a property taxpayer and one for property owner,” said Keith A. Pittsford, a Mission Valley architect who serves on the board and was recently appointed to chair the membership subcommittee.
The local planning group is the first stop in the development process in San Diego. Pittsford explains the duties of board members.
“You make recommendations to the City Council, Planning Commission, city staff and other governmental agencies on land-use matters, specifically concerning the preparation of, adoption of, implementation of, or amendment to the General Plan or land-use plan when a plan relates to the Mission Valley community boundaries,” he said.
Although serving on the board is purely as a volunteer, members are required by the city to take a course, either online or in person, on how to responsibly do the job.
“To be an eligible member of the community,” Pittsford said, “an individual must be at least 18 years of age and shall be affiliated with the community as one of the following: property owner (residence or business), property taxpayer (residence or business), resident (owner or renter), or Mission Valley businessperson.”
Each category has six positions, so a full board consists of 24 members.
Pittsford was elected to the board to fill a businessperson seat.
“Our firm, SGPA, has been fortunate to have been located here and we have been involved with many projects in the Valley for over 30 years,” he said. “My only subcommittee is that of membership, which is new and this is one of my first official acts. If any of the readers qualify and would like to apply, please have them email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
